Many factors have led to a drastic shift in consumers’ shopping expectations. Ecommerce is taking off, and for multiple segments packaging is an essential part of the experience.
Dusobox understands this opportunity and has built a business well suited for modern packaging needs. The company focuses on client-centric partnerships along with sustainable growth by providing custom design and printed corrugated displays and packaging with the help of advanced technology partnerships and cutting-edge equipment.
A privately held family business, the packaging provider was established in 1951 under the leadership of the Kelley family. Today it staffs more than 100 employees out of two locations and 250,000 square feet, including its headquarters in Orlando, FL.
Its core business is custom corrugated packaging and display solutions. It is a G7 certified manufacturer focused on workflow development, structural design, engineering, printing, and finishing while providing effective and environmentally responsive custom packaging and displays.
Dusobox’s mission is to convert its customers’ toughest corrugated printing and finishing challenges into their greatest success stories.
To ensure the business is as efficient and professional as it can be, Dusobox understands the importance of great partnerships. Therefore, about six years ago, when evaluating its go-to-market strategy, the company decided it was critical to provide additional digital print innovation to its customer base. It decided to work with a long-term partner—Jackson Paper/Sustainable Printing, as well as a technology integrator, Significans Automation to reach this goal.
Corrugated Printing
For production of its displays and packaging, Dusobox sends a good portion of its digital work out to Sustainable Printing, which is the newest division of the Jackson Paper family as of 2020. The company offers customers on demand digital printing solutions in an environmentally conscious manner.
The majority of the work for Dusobox is printed on Sustainable Printing’s HP Inc. PageWide C500 digital corrugated press, which was installed in 2021. When deciding on the press, many factors were taken into consideration, including quality of print, maximum sheet size, speed, price, sustainability, and customer service. Randy Gilbert, creative director, Sustainable Printing, says the HP PageWide C500 matched all of these needs without sacrificing anything—making the decision easy.
“HP has a proven track record with incredible customer service to support our business today and into the future. The HP PageWide C500 corrugated press is aligned with Sustainable Printing’s core values. The C500 is one of the only digital single-pass, post-print presses with water-based inks. Water-based inks allow us to offer truly food-safe packaging at offset quality with no harsh chemistry and a reduced environmental impact without sacrificing speed or quality,” he adds.
Essential Workflow
As its primary supplier, Roland Greene, director of prepress and workflow technology, Dusobox, collaborated with Sustainable Printing to reevaluate the workflow, realizing that minimally staffed operations are best with the onset of a digital press, especially when tied with ecommerce and end-to-end automation.
Significans Automation is a software integrator specializing in delivering next-generation automation to the printing and packaging industry. It offers programming and expertise in custom workflow development, deployment of communication and project management systems, color management, and end-to-end business integration. While upholding software neutrality, Significans Automation is committed to advising and tailoring best-in-class software to optimally fit the environment at hand.
The stars truly aligned when Greene attended an industry event where Significans Automation was also on site. The workflow company sat in on a panel discussing how it had completed an automation project for Boxes Inc. with great success.
Greene describes the implementation with Significans Automation and Sustainable Printing as “one of the smoothest integration projects we’ve ever done.”
Since the workflow was put in place in Fall 2021, Sustainable Printing reports an eight-fold reduction in prepress staff requirements, including quicker turnaround times and smaller runs—all with enhanced customer experience.
A Typical Job
Collaboration between Dusobox; its primary supplier, Sustainable Printing; and workflow automation through Significans Automation makes custom corrugated packaging and display work seamless for Dusobox customers.
Clients are able to prepare a high-resolution PDF and login to a custom, personalized website to upload files. Preflight is automated, imposed with marks, and a custom email link is provided back to the client. From here, customers click a link to review the file online. Once approved, the job is color managed and sent off to press at Sustainable Printing.
Each customer with access to the website has their own personalized portal, which is unique to its business and requirements. They can use the system in a variety of ways depending on their needs as well as their specific level of graphics sophistication.
Effective and Efficient
Dusobox is invested in its customers and its future. Because the custom packaging and displays provider is not afraid to strategically invest in solutions that offer automation, it minimizes potential for error and improves turnaround time as well as ease of use for the buyer. It also understands the importance of partnership, forging important relationships that each benefit from the others’ successes.
