This year’s Graph Expo takes place from September 28 to October 1, 2014 at Chicago, IL’s McCormick Place. Each year, the graphic communications industry comes together to participate in the trade show. Below are exhibitor booth previews.
Avanti, booth 651, demonstrates its most recent version of Avanti Slingshot, the next generation print management information system, incorporating business intelligence—including customer relationship management, dashboards and reporting; production planning—including estimating, imposition, planned purchasing, sales orders, inventory management, and scheduling; as well as, warehousing, shipping and billing into one easy-to-use, easy-to-implement system.
Canon U.S.A., booth 613, showcases the latest additions of its business imaging solutions portfolio that exemplify its booth theme, Enabling Creativity Without Boundaries. Equipped with new features that deliver advanced levels of image quality, output consistency, and efficiency, visitors learn about solutions ideal for both commercial and in-house print environments. Product demonstrations are available on a range of solutions including the new imagePRESS C800 color digital press series—a compact and affordable solution, which delivers print speeds of up to 80 page per minute for multiple media types. A key attraction is the The Inkjet Crossroads exhibit, featuring a range of production and wide format inkjet printing solutions, presentations, and a knowledge bar where experts share industry key knowledge and insights.
The Challenge Machinery Company, booth 3621, showcases its new TC operating system. Available with its programmable Titan and Champion paper cutters, it utilizes a 10.5-inch color touchscreen, providing a clean, easy to use interface with intuitive design. Greatly improved cutting efficiencies are possible with faster backgauge positioning, repeat commands in the main screen, and pattern repeat commands in the programming module to simplify complex jobs. The TC System is the first controller in the industry to recognize .CSV formatted files, common with most spread sheet software, making offline programming simple and quick to implement. Ethernet and USB ports enable the receipt and sending of programs through a network.
CHILI Publish, booth 380, showcases CHILI Publisher technology. The online document editing solution that integrates seamlessly and transparently with a range of workflows and production platforms, CHILI Publisher provides powerful editing capabilities and comes with an extensive feature set previously available in dedicated publishing applications, only. CHILI Publisher reduces time-to-market and can be offered to end users—including marketing departments, brand owners, small business owners—as a value-add to increase traditional print revenue. While print output is the most common use today—in the form of a press-quality PDF, interactive content is increasing in popularity—including Web, mobile, Flash, online ads, and personalized and variable driven.
Colter & Peterson, booth 3617, features Microcut and other control systems. The company highlights four, Microcut automated backgauge programs for paper cutters, including two making their North American debut, joined by the C&P Microsystems B-65 control system and a Saber 45-inch paper cutter. Adaptable to any brand paper cutter between 20 to 150 inches, the popularity of Microcut celebrates more than 30,000 worldwide installations.
Count Machinery, booth 3748, introduces the new Count FC114, one of a kind all-in-one creaser, numbering, and perforating machines. The U.S. built FC114 combines a compression creaser with pneumatic numbering machine and high-speed perforating system all operated by simple touch-screen controls. The FC114 eliminates toner crack by compressing the paper fibers with a die matrix that doesn’t displace toner and allows you to fold your stocks while completely eliminating cracking. Count also introduces the latest version of its PerfMaster Air V3 with single sided register guide. Additionally, the company showcases the NumberJet PMVA inkjet variable data system with perforating and sheet sizes up to 24-inches wide.

Diversified Graphic Machinery, booth 867, presents its full line up of exclusive print enhancement technologies and cost reduction capabilities for the global packaging market. Located in the “green” space, the company offers its exclusive, combination system of FOILDEX inline cold foil system with indexing and FILMDEX UV/LED Cast and Cure holographic effect system, hot foil stamping, and die-cutting technologies.
Drylam LLC / Fujipla, booth 3963, exhibits new lamination systems. The fully automatic ALM 3222 two-side laminator is a second generation system designed to eliminate hand feeding and hand trimming of sheets. Designed specifically for finishing on demand print formats, users load the feeder and press the green button, and the machine does the rest with virtually no labor, to create laminated and fully trimmed sheets. For wide format sheets, the Drylam Duo systems are also exhibited. The machines are capable of running both thermal and cold PSA adhesive films. These systems have laminating and mounting capabilities available in 47- and 62-inch widths. The systems feature foot pedal machine advance, rewinds for release liners, and independent digital controls for top and bottom heat. Also exhibited is the PLS3310, a fully automated single side laminator designed for digitally printed sheet formats.
Duplo USA, booth 2613, exhibits the latest in digital color finishing. The newest additions to the Slitter/Cutter/Creaser line are displayed, including the versatile DC-646 and entry-level DC-616 PRO models. With the ability to slit/cut/crease in a single pass, the DC-646 features optional rotary tool and cross-perforating modules—both with strike perforating capabilities—to create a wider range of unique applications. Also on the floor is the popular UD-300 Die Cutter featuring a new separator and conveyor unit. The UD-300 Die Cutter produces a variety of custom-shaped applications at 6,000 cycles per hour and only the finished pieces are delivered onto the conveyor for faster productivity. Visitors to the booth have the opportunity to see the widest range of finishing equipment—including bookletmaking systems, perfect binders, and UV coaters—all in one place.
Eagle Systems, booth 2461, showcases Eagle Systems Cold Foil, which is designed, engineered, and manufactured at the company’s 16,000 square foot facility in NJ. An in-line foiling solution for offset printing presses, it is the only totally automatic cold foil solution on the market, can run single or multiple combinations of cold foil webs from two inches to the width of the press, no dancer rollers mean no foil dust, no operator adjustments, 24/7 internet service support worldwide, and free upgrades.
EFI, booth 1902, features tools to fuel business growth, including inkjet offerings featuring EFI’s UltraDrop 7pL grayscale printhead technology, plus the high-volume EFI VUTEk HS100 Pro press and the entry-level EFI H1625 LED printer. Also on exhibit will be the new, EFI Fiery FS150 Pro digital front end, Web to print products that include the recently acquired EFI DirectSmile software, the 2014 InterTech Award-winning EFI IQuote estimating software, and its leading portfolio of MIS/ERP technologies.
Enfocus, booth 535, showcases the latest version of its solution, which offers users an expanded range of tools to quickly check, edit, and fix troublesome PDF files. Also shown is Switch 12, update 2. See new PitStop FontFix, an Adobe Acrobat Pro and Standard plug-in that checks and replaces fonts missing from PDF files, available free for customers who share relevant thoughts on social media. PitStop Font Fix is the result of an agreement between Enfocus and Monotype, a leading global provider of typefaces, technology, and expertise. Users check PDFs for missing fonts and make simple corrections. If fonts are missing, users simply embed them from fonts available on their system, or download from Monotype Baseline, a cloud-based font library which holds over 60,000 fonts.

Epson, booth 1243, introduces a new SpectroProofer inline spectrophotometer for its 17-, 24-, and 44-inch Epson Stylus Pro printers. Developed jointly with X-Rite, and driven by industry leading supporting RIP technology, these optional SpectroProofers provide automated color management and verification-related tasks for a variety of proofing applications. The new SpectroProofer-UVS models will support the M1 measurement standard, are UV selectable between M1 and M2 standards, and support up to 50 percent more patches per scan. The SpectroProofer allows for consistency between 17-, 24-, and 44-inch printers, making them ideal for commercial graphics and package proofing applications. Epson also showcases its leading professional imaging printing technology within the dye-sublimation, direct-to-garment, signage, corporate graphics, and technical markets.

FUJIFILM, booth 3213 along with United Kingdom-based FFEI Ltd. release Graphium, a high-speed UV inkjet press with a 16-inch print width targeted at converters and printers producing labels, packaging, and specialty print applications. Graphium is a modular UV inkjet press that allows for both flexographic print stations and inline finishing options. This provides a level of flexibility and productivity to print the complex projects that customers increasingly require in today’s market.

Hewlett-Packard (HP), booth 1913, showcases the B2-format HP Indigo 10000 and 30000 Digital Presses. The HP Indigo 10000 offers print providers increased efficiency and a range of digital print applications. The HP Indigo 30000 is the first Indigo designed especially for folding cartons. The new HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press creates applications with special effects such as digital watermarks and raised print. HP’s Latex 360 Printer with the new Gen 3 inks produces indoor and outdoor prints on a variety of traditional signage substrates that are durable and provide scratch resistance. Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A, booth 1321, features several new production solutions alongside the bizhub PRESS line of digital print systems. In addition to recently announced solutions including the bizhub PRESS C1100, bizhub PRESS C1085, and bizhub PRESS 2250P, Konica Minolta booth also features specialized production-level printing and finishing solutions that further enhance the capabilities of graphics professionals and print shops. Lasermax Roll Systems, booth 220, exhibits multiple feeding and finishing solutions for high-speed digital printers, featuring the new Roll 30 solution for rewinding 30-inch rolls, the TC 8300 dynamic perforator, Stack 2320 for cut and stacked output, WebVision quality monitoring, and PageReady NL for near-line cutting and stacking of HP Indigo 7X00 output. MBM Corporation, booth 4051, adds three new paper creasers to its lineup of digital finishing equipment. The MBM icrease series, consisting of the PRO, EXCEL, and AIR models, debuts at the 2014 Graph Expo. Each creaser in the icrease line features touch screen programming for fast set-up and operation along with a rotary actuated die crease system that produces sharp creases with no cracking. Creasing speeds range from 2,000—icrease PRO, to 5,500—icrease AIR, sheets per hour and each will accept paper weights between 16 and 120 lbs. MBO America, booth 849, showcases a range of solutions in its booth. The M80 Flexible Folding System is a highlight, offering modular add-on capabilities unlike any other folding machine on the market. Meadows Publishing Solutions, booth 439, demonstrates the latest versions of its DesignMerge and AutoPrice software programs, which are now available for Adobe InDesign Creative Cloud. DesignMerge can take any document and make it variable. For example, use AutoPrice to automate updating of catalogs, price lists, and more. Two of its newest product offerings include the AutoPrice PDF Exporter module, designed to export catalog pages into a format that is compatible with all major online page flipping systems. The AutoPrice links in the catalog pages are automatically converted into hyperlinks that can be used to reference SKU-level information on an external Web site. The AutoPrice Squinch Reporter module produces comprehensive Square Inch Analysis reports from one or more catalog pages prepared using AutoPrice. Full SKU-level details about catalog square inch utilization is provided in a customized report format. Support for global, shared, and combined square inch areas is also included as a standard feature.
Messe Düsseldorf, booth 3643, promotes its worldwide program of international printing trade fairs. This includes drupa 2016, which will be held from May 31 to June 10, 2016 in Düsseldorf, Germany and All in Print China 2014, which takes place from November 14 to 17, 2014 in Shanghai. MGI, booth 3013, launches an inline complement to the JETvarnish3D UV spot coater, the iFOIL module. The iFOIL opens doors to endless digital embossing and hot foil stamping solutions. Mimaki USA, booth 2644, shows a variety of printers for the sign and graphics, textile and apparel, and industrial printing markets. The new Mimaki JV300 Series of high-productivity printers are featured. The JV300 Series offers eight ink channels and nine eco-solvent ink colors to suit a range of applications. Mimaki SS21 eco-solvent inks are used for indoor applications such as point of purchase displays, posters, exhibits, backlits and window clings; they are also used for outdoor-durable applications such as banners, window graphics, and vehicle wraps. For textile and apparel production, Mimaki SB53 dye-sublimation inks are available for JV300 Series printers. All JV300 Series printers shipped in North America include the Mimaki Bulk Ink System 3 featuring two-liter ink packs for all but White ink.

Mondi, booth 2353, highlights the expansion of its high-speed inkjet paper distribution in North America. Mondi’s high-speed inkjet portfolio 2.0 has been further developed and optimized so that it brings a number of benefits to printers and end-users. The larger color gamut in critical areas, such as red, compensates the magenta weakness of current high-speed inkjet systems and enables improved accuracy for printing logos and images. The increased color gamut also results in potential ink savings for printers compared to a standard treated paper, reducing costs and increasing printers’ competitiveness on the market.

Mutoh America, Inc., booth 4241, showcases the new ValueJet 426UF – 19 inch table top and ValueJet 1626UH – 64 inch hybrid UV-LED printers. Print on almost any substrate up to 2.75 inches thick on the ValueJet 426UF, while the ValueJet 1626UH prints on both rigid and roll substrates up to a half inch thick.
Nordson Corporation, booth 3840, continues to introduce new PURfect Binding Solutions to simplify and make more efficient the use of reactive hot melt polyurethane (PUR) adhesives for digital book production. With decades of experience processing hot melt adhesives and particular expertise with PURs, Nordson’s recent melter innovations include VersaPUR tank and MiniPUR Plus melters. Nordson’s closed PUR adhesive application systems optimize adhesive use and enhance production efficiency and product quality. Nordson specializes in integrated spine glue applications for single or multi-clamp binders. Its PUR application head offering includes the EP48 BoD and SB60 applicators for short runs and quick changes seen in digital book binding. Nordson application systems make PUR processing easier and more efficient for producing just a single book or for a large production run. The NSF Excel, landscape format platen press, can run up to 5,000 impressions per hour producing die cutting, flat foil stamping, blind and foil embossing, and high-speed foil fusing.
Ultimate TechnoGraphics, booth 541, exhibits new automated connectivity solutions for Web to print and near-line finishing. It marks the first showing of the new AutoFlow gang run optimization for print MIS, leveraging the imposition engine of Impostrip Automation to allow users to connect it directly to their MIS and estimation system to collect key data for decision making based on the most cost effective production scenarios with variables such as press and finishing requirements. The AutoFlow module consumes a JDF ticket and determines the optimum number of press forms needed to run a group of different size jobs of varying and reports back to the MIS to propose the best imposition optimization based on variable press cut-off and width or sheet size. Ultimate will also show Ultimate Bindery to build finishing flow for 17 different near-line devices from seven manufacturers.

The high-speed binary-array printing system of the BX6000 series prints on a variety of materials and surfaces. Fast drying inks eliminate dryers and associated energy costs. Unsurpassed in terms of robustness, the printheads are designed for use throughout the entire service life. The Videojet 4320 inkjet addressing and imaging system is flexible and scalable choice for mailing houses and commercial printers. With adjustable print resolutions and expandable printhead configurations from two to eight inches, in two- or four-inch increments, the Videojet 4320 can print promotional messages, coupons, graphics, and basic eight-line addresses.
Xerox, booth 1213, showcases its portfolio of technologies and solutions to help print providers automate workflows, produce high-value jobs, and stay relevant in today’s competitive marketplace. An array of digital color printing technology, including high-speed inkjet systems and the new Versant 2100 Press, are displayed. Zünd America, booth 3202, introduces an automated production workflow based on automatic quick response code capture and a robotic off-load system. Capable of processing one or, depending on size, multiple stacks of sheets with randomly nested print jobs, the system automatically—and instantaneously—retrieves the corresponding cut files and finishes them–all while the robotic arm continually picks up and stacks the cut/finished parts. The system, which is ideal for narrow-format, non-stop production, is shown in conjunction with a Zünd S3 M-800 cutter. Zünd also shows a larger, fully configured G3 M-2500 system, with the latest high-capacity tooling for processing a wide range of materials at unsurpassed quality and productivity levels.
